Before Putting Letters Together, Children Need to Hear Sounds: Phonological Awareness in Literacy

The child looks at the word duck, recognizes the letter P and even knows how to name the letters. Still, when we ask what the first sound of the word is, she hesitates. In another activity, you don't realize that duck and cat end in a similar way, nor can they put together the sounds presented separately to discover a word.
This scene may be strange. If the child knows letters, why do they still have difficulty reading or writing? Because literacy doesn't just depend on memorizing the alphabet. Before and during learning to write, they need to develop the ability to pay attention to the sound structure of speech. This skill is called phonological awareness.
What is phonological awareness?
Phonological awareness is the ability to reflect on the sounds of oral language and manipulate them intentionally. It appears when the child realizes that a sentence is made up of words, that words can be separated into syllables, that some rhyme and that smaller sounds can be removed, added or replaced.
This skill has different levels. Some work with larger and more perceptible sound units; others require attention to smaller units:
- perceive words within a sentence;
- recognize and produce rhymes;
- identify words that start with similar sounds;
- separate and join syllables;
- identify the initial or final sound of a word;
- joining, separating or modifying phonemes, which are the smallest sound units capable of differentiating words.
Phonemic awareness, therefore, is a more specific part of phonological awareness. Teaching the relationships between phonemes and graphemes adds another element: the connection between sounds and the letters that represent them. The concepts are related, but they are not synonymous.
Why does this skill help with literacy?
The alphabetic writing system represents, with its regularities and conventions, sound aspects of speech. To advance in reading and writing, children need to understand that words are not indivisible blocks. The word suitcase, for example, can be separated into two syllables and compared with map by the initial sound. Later, the child learns to analyze and combine even smaller units.
Research on learning to read shows a consistent relationship between phonemic awareness and word reading development. Intervention studies also indicate that planned phonological awareness activities, especially when linked to letter knowledge and the alphabetic principle, can benefit children at the beginning of literacy and those who have difficulties.
This does not mean that phonological awareness explains everything. As we discussed in the article about Why Difficulty in Literacy Does Not Define a Child’s Potential, reading is not just transforming letters into sounds. Reader training also involves oral language, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, contact with significant texts, knowledge of the world, motivation and pedagogical mediation. Working on sounds without reading stories, talking about texts or producing writing with a social function would reduce literacy to a technical exercise.
A practical progression: from what is most perceptible to what is most abstract
In general, rhymes and syllables are more accessible than isolated phonemes. Progression should follow what the child can already do with help and what they begin to do independently.
1. Listen and compare words
The first movement is to direct attention to the sound. Songs, poems, stories and books with repetition help the child to realize that some words sound similar.
The adult may ask: “Which word goes with heart: balloon or house?” Then, you can invite the child to invent a rhyme, even if a funny or non-existent word appears. The initial objective is to understand the sound pattern, not to evaluate vocabulary or spelling.
2. Separate and join syllables
Clapping for each part of the name, organizing pictures according to the number of syllables and guessing a word presented in parts are simple activities. The adult says bo-ne-ca, with short pauses, and the child puts the parts together to discover the word.
It is also possible to do the opposite: show a picture and ask the child to “speak slowly”, marking the syllables with caps or blocks. Concrete support makes visible a structure that, in common speech, passes very quickly.
3. Observe initial and final sounds
Then, the game can focus on words that start in a similar way. “Which of these words starts with knife: fairy, cow or table?” The choice of examples needs to be careful so that the task really compares sounds, and not just letters or meanings.
Sound hunts also work well: looking, in the room or in an illustration, for objects whose names begin with a certain sound. At school, the teacher can use the children's names, as long as the proposal does not expose those who find it most difficult.
4. Join and separate phonemes
Tasks with phonemes require greater abstraction. The adult can prolong and join sounds to form a short word or ask the child to understand which sounds make up a simple word. Movable letters can be introduced to show how each analyzed sound participates in writing.
It is important to speak the sounds without adding unnecessary vowels. The sound represented by M, for example, should not be presented as “mê” when the task is to combine phonemes, as this adds another sound and can confuse the child.
5. Manipulate sounds and form new words
At a more advanced level, the child can remove or replace sounds: “If we take away the first duck sound, what’s left?” or “What word appears if we change the first mala sound to the s sound?”
These proposals must be brief, graduated and mediated. When the challenge becomes much greater than what the child can accomplish, the game loses meaning and can reinforce the feeling of failure.
How families can help without turning their home into a classroom
At home, five minutes of well-managed play can be more productive than a long list of exercises. Everyday life offers many opportunities:
- look for rhymes while taking a shower or on the way to school;
- separate the names of family members into palms;
- think about foods that start with the same sound;
- play “I'm thinking of a word that starts with...”;
- use movable letters to assemble known words;
- read stories with repetitions and invite the child to complete the predictable passages.
It is also important not to compare siblings, turn the activity into a test or conclude that the child “is not paying attention”. Learning benefits from frequency and intentionality, but also from emotional security.
What the school needs to observe
More than recording successes and errors, the school must observe patterns and response to mediation. Does the child recognize rhymes? Can you segment syllables? Identify initial sounds? Can you relate these sounds to the letters? Does it improve when given an example, visual support or manipulative material? Do you transfer what you learned to reading and writing?
It is also necessary to differentiate between a skill under construction and a persistent difficulty. If the child has had unsystematic teaching, frequent absences or few opportunities to interact with texts and language games, their difficulty cannot immediately be interpreted as a disorder.
On the other hand, when difficulties persist despite adequate teaching and targeted support, appear in different situations and affect reading, writing, participation or self-esteem, it is important to deepen the assessment. Phonological awareness is not a diagnostic test
A child not understanding a certain rhyme or not being able to separate phonemes in an activity does not allow us to conclude that he or she has dyslexia, Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) or any other disorder. Phonological awareness is an important dimension, but it needs to be analyzed together with oral language, memory, attention, school experience, quality of teaching, hearing, emotional aspects and response to interventions.
When there is persistent difficulty, psychopedagogical assessment can investigate how the child understands the writing system, what strategies they use and under what conditions they learn best. Depending on the signs found, coordination with Speech Therapy, Psychology, Neuropsychology, Pediatrics or other areas may be necessary. The purpose of the assessment is not to look for an acronym to quickly explain the difficulty. It involves gathering evidence to choose an intervention compatible with that child’s real needs.
Conclusion
Before reading fluently, children need to discover that speech has an organization that can be observed. Rhymes, syllables and phonemes are no longer just passing sounds and start to function as clues to understand writing.
Developing phonological awareness does not mean rushing childhood or reducing literacy to isolated sounds. It means opening one of the gateways to the written world — keeping stories, conversations, games, real texts and the right to learn without fear around it.
